LED Lamps MR16

LED MR16 Votatec

Product Overview

The MR16 LED is a 12V GU5.3 bi-pin reflector lamp for track heads, recessed trims and display fixtures. It's the low-voltage MR16, not the 120V GU10 twist-lock, so check the socket before you order. 7W draw, 539 lumens measured at 3000K, 40 degree beam, CRI above 80. Choose 3000K, 4000K or 5000K. Dimmable on the transformer's line side. UL listed and rated for enclosed fixtures.

Can I replace MR16 halogen bulbs with LED?

Usually yes, but the transformer decides, not the lamp. A 7W LED draws far less than the 20W to 60W minimum load most electronic halogen transformers expect. Below that threshold the transformer can't sense a load, so it cycles, and you get flicker, buzz, or a lamp that won't strike at all. Nothing's faulty. It's a mismatch. Magnetic transformers, the iron-core and toroidal types, have no meaningful minimum load and take LED retrofits without complaint. Check which type feeds the circuit before you price a whole building. Retrofitting one head to test tells you what the other two hundred will do.

Are MR16 bulbs being phased out?

Not in Canada. There's no Canadian ban on MR16 halogen, unlike the EU, which pulled G4 and G9 halogen in 2023. What's actually happening is supply thinning as manufacturers wind down halogen production. Crews switch because replacements are getting harder to source and because a 7W lamp replaces a 35W to 50W one, not because a deadline forced it.

What does MR16 mean, and is mine GU5.3 or GU10?

MR16 describes the reflector, not the base. "MR" is multifaceted reflector, and 16 is the face diameter in eighths of an inch, so two inches across. Two different bases share that shape, and this is where orders go wrong. This lamp is GU5.3: two straight pins, 12V, fed from a transformer. GU10 is a twist-lock that runs on 120V line voltage. They look similar in a photo and they don't interchange. If the existing lamp has two thin pins, you want this one.

Beam angle and fixture fit

Independent photometry measures this lamp at a 42.9 degree beam, published as 40 degrees, delivering 539 lumens at 6.6W actual draw. That's a narrow flood. Tight enough to pick out artwork, signage or retail shelving without washing the wall behind it. The body is 1-6/8" x 1-7/8", the standard MR16 envelope, and it's rated for enclosed fixtures. For the full candela distribution, open the IES file in the Related documents panel and drop it into your AGi32 or DIALux model. Send us your fixture count and the transformer type on site, and we'll come back with a wholesale quote and a compatibility check.
