Product Details

The JL-103EE is a 347V photocell that switches exterior lighting dusk to dawn without a step-down transformer. It's a thermal CdS unit rated for Canada's 347/600V commercial services. It carries 2000W tungsten or 2000VA ballast at 347VAC, draws 1.5VA, and turns on at 10-20 Lx, off at 30-60 Lx. Time delay runs 20-120 seconds. Rated -40°C to +70°C. Polycarbonate housing, raintight construction, cULus Listed to UL773A, six year limited warranty.

What does a 347V photocell do?

A 347V photocell switches a lighting circuit on at dusk and off at dawn, wired directly onto a 347VAC supply. The JL-103EE brings the load on between 10 and 20 Lx and drops it off between 30 and 60 Lx. A 20 to 120 second delay stops headlights or a passing truck flicking the circuit. Switching is SPST, normally open. The sensing element is a half-inch cadmium sulfide cell behind a UV stabilised lens.

How do you tell if a photocell is bad?

Cover the lens and watch. Put black electrical tape or another opaque material over the eye in daylight, and the load should come on inside two minutes. Don't use your finger. Enough light passes through skin to hold the switch open, and you'll write off a good unit as dead. On a fresh install, it's normal for the control to take several minutes to switch off the first time.

What happens when it fails?

It fails on. If the contacts give out, the lighting stays lit instead of going dark, which is what you want on a parking lot, stairwell or walkway circuit where an outage is a liability question, not a maintenance ticket. Electrical life is rated at 6,500 cycles. On a dusk-to-dawn duty of one cycle a day, that's roughly 17 years.

Wiring and fixture fit

Three leads. Black to line, white to neutral, red to the lamp load. The body mounts flush through a junction box knockout and fastens with the supplied locknut and rubber washer, so budget a half-inch knockout. Outdoors, the box connection has to be watertight. Don't aim the lens at the fixture it controls, a lit sign, or anything that bounces light back, or the circuit cycles on and off all night. Keep the load at or under 2000W tungsten, 2000VA ballast. For the wiring diagram, the dusk and dawn thresholds and the troubleshooting chart, open the Manual and Spec sheet. Send us your circuit voltage and unit count, and we'll come back with a wholesale quote plus a check on whether the 120VAC version suits the rest of the job.
