What does a photocell sensor do?
A photocell sensor switches a lighting circuit on at dusk and off at dawn by reading ambient light. No timer, no clock to reset. The JL-106AV uses a 1/2" cadmium sulfide cell wired in series with the load. It closes at 10-20 lux and opens again at 30-60 lux. A 30 to 120 second delay sits between reading and switch. That stops headlights, lightning or a passing flash from tripping the circuit. How do you tell if a photocell is bad?
Watch which way it fails. Stays on all day? Low line voltage, welded contacts from an overloaded circuit, or too little light reaching the cell. Blinks at night but steady by day? Reflected light is hitting the cell, so reorient it. Blinking by day is almost always miswiring. The JL-106AV fails on, not off. If the cell dies your lighting stays lit rather than leaving a parking lot dark. For security and egress work, that matters. Why the 2000W rating changes the job
Most photocontrols on the shelf handle 1000W tungsten or 1800VA ballast. This one takes 2000W, so a single control carries a longer run of wall packs or area lights before you split the circuit. It's rated to 6,500 switching cycles, roughly 17 years at one cycle a night, and holds -40°C to +70°C.Where it can and can't go
It fits a standard 1/2" knockout with the supplied gasket and zinc alloy locknut. Mount it on top of the junction box, or the side. Never the bottom unless water can't reach the wires. Don't aim it at the fixture it controls, at a window, or at a street light. On a south wall point it east, west or down. Send us your unit count and the voltage you're switching, and we'll quote wholesale and confirm the 120VAC model suits your run.Show more
