The JL-103AG is a hardwired 120V photocell that switches passage and doorway lighting on at dusk and off at dawn. It mounts through a standard junction-box knockout, so there's no swivel arm to aim. Rated loading is 1800W tungsten or 1100VA ballast at 120VAC, 50/60Hz, drawing 1.5VA. Time delay runs 20 to 120 seconds. Listed by UL LLC to UL773A. UV-stabilised polycarbonate enclosure, rated -40°C to +70°C, six-year warranty.

Is a photocell the same as dusk to dawn?

Same device, two names. A photocell reads ambient light and switches the circuit, which is what "dusk to dawn" describes. The JL-103AG turns on between 10 and 20 lux and off between 30 and 60 lux. Those thresholds are fixed rather than adjustable, so every unit on a site switches at the same light level instead of drifting apart. The 20 to 120 second delay does the quiet work. It stops passing headlights, lightning and a neighbouring fixture from flicking the circuit.

How do you wire a 120V photocell?

Three leads, AWG#16 AWM3321, minimum 4in. Black goes to line, white to neutral, red to the load. Disconnect power, take off the junction box cover, drop the switch into the knockout hole and fasten it with the locknut. One instruction matters more than the rest. Don't aim the lens at artificial or reflected light. Point it at a wall pack or a lit sign and it cycles all night.

How do you know if a photocell is bad?

Test it before you replace it. Cover the lens with black tape or another opaque material, and the load should energise within about two minutes. Don't use a finger. Enough light passes through skin to hold the switch open, which reads as a dead unit. A new install also takes several minutes to turn off the first time. That's normal, not a fault. Failure mode is Fail-On. A failed sensor leaves the load energised rather than dark, which is what you want on stairwells, corridors and egress circuits.

Will it fit?

The body is 52 x 28.5 x 21mm with a 22mm lens, so it drops into a standard knockout without a bracket. Ambient rating is -40°C to +70°C, humidity to 96%.
