Can you put a motion sensor bulb in a regular socket?
Yes. This one has a standard E26 medium base and runs on 120V, so it screws into any existing socket. The sensor sits inside the bulb, which means a contractor can add occupancy control to a hallway, stairwell or storage room without pulling a wall sensor or touching the wiring. That's the whole argument for a sensor lamp over a sensor switch: it's a lamp change, not a service call.
How far does the sensor actually reach?
4.92 ft, about 1.5 metres, at a 4.92 ft mounting height. That's a short, tight cone, and it's the number most listings won't print. Mount it directly above where people walk, not across a room. Hold time is 60 seconds from the factory. The daylight threshold ships disabled, so the bulb triggers by day as well as after dark until you change it.
What are the downsides of sensor bulbs?
This one isn't dimmable. The dimmable version of this lamp is a different part number, so don't put it on a dimmed circuit. A pyroelectric sensor reads body heat, which means it won't see through glass or a solid opaque shade. It's IP20, so keep it indoors and out of damp locations.
Will it work in an enclosed fixture?
It's factory rated for enclosed fixtures, which most motion bulbs aren't. Heat isn't the limit here, sightline is. The sensor needs to see the space, so a clear or open-bottom fixture works and a fully closed opaque shade doesn't. Check your compartment too: this lamp is 4.92" tall by 2.37" across, taller than a plain A19 because of the sensor dome.
