What is the hole size for a 4 inch pot light?
For this fixture it's 4.53 inches, or 115mm. That's the number to cut, and it isn't 4 inches. The name is the aperture class, not the opening. The 5.2 inch trim covers about a third of an inch of rough edge all round. Total width is 5.48 inches, assembled depth 3.99 inches, so check the plenum before you order.
Why does a commercial downlight need 120-347V?
Canadian commercial buildings run a 600Y/347V three-phase service, so 347V is what any single phase to neutral gives you. Higher voltage draws less current for the same load: thinner conductors, smaller breakers, more fixtures per circuit. It accepts 120V through 347V on the same leads, so you don't stock a part number per service. Four leads leave the integrated junction box: black to hot, white to neutral, violet to 0-10V positive, grey to 0-10V negative. Use 18 AWG minimum, or 14 AWG on continuous runs.
How much light does it actually put out?
ENERGY STAR certifies 1,920 lumens and 120 lm/W at the 16W setting, with CRI 94 and 102,000 hours to L70. Drop the wattage and efficacy climbs, up to about 135 lm/W at the 8W step. Before you pick a colour: at 16W the photometry measures roughly 1,690 lumens at 2700K against 1,900 at 4000K, so warm white costs you about 11%. All five wattage steps have their own IES file at every colour temperature.
Will it fit an existing opening?
Retrofitting, pull the old lamp and reflector first, then measure. The trim covers a ragged 4.53 inch hole, not a 5 inch one. Spring clips and a carabiner safety lanyard carry the weight, so there's no separate housing to buy. Keep it 5 feet clear of the floor and 5 inches from curtains, blinds or similar combustible material. Dimming is 0-100%, tested with Lutron, Leviton and Legrand 0-10V controls.
