Product Overview

The PL-2" is a galvanized rough-in plate that fixes where a 2" ultra-thin recessed LED will sit, set and wired before the drywall goes up. A ruler runs along both long edges, so spacing gets marked and cut off the plate itself. Footprint is 13-3/16" x 6.5" with a 2-9/16" opening and no lip. Formed from 0.6mm galvanized steel. Sold by the case to Canadian contractors and distributors.

What is a rough-in plate for recessed lighting?

It's a flat metal bracket that fixes the position of a recessed light before the ceiling is closed, screwed across the joists at rough-in. On canless and ultra-thin fixtures there's no housing can to hang, so the plate does that job instead. The electrician sets it and pulls the wire, the ceiling goes on, and the light snaps in last.

How do you avoid recessed light spacing mistakes?

Measure off the plate, not off the finished ceiling. Both long edges of the PL-2" carry a printed ruler graduated to 9 inches, so a run can be spaced and centred at rough-in while everything is still open and visible. The two 4-11/16" slots let you slide the plate along the bay before you fix it, and the corner screw holes sit 5-29/32" apart. The opening lands 6-9/16" from the end, near enough centred on the 13-3/16" length.

When does the plate go in?

Before the drywall, in three steps. Set the plates at your designed locations while the ceiling is open, and wire them. Have the drywallers cut or router the opening using the plate as the guide. Snap the light in once the board is finished. Working in that order means nobody cuts blind, and no fixture drifts off centre between trades.

Which fixtures fit this plate?

The 2-9/16" opening is sized for Votatec's 2" recessed line, where the fixture body measures 2-3/8" (61mm). This is the no-lip version, a flat plate with no collar around the opening. For 3", 4" and 6" openings, the PL-3", PL-4" and PL-6" run the same 13-3/16" x 6.5" footprint, so your layout method doesn't change between sizes.
