What are directional recessed lights?
They're recessed fixtures whose heads pivot and rotate, so you aim the beam instead of accepting a fixed downward wash. This one puts three of them behind a single 11-5/8in by 4-3/8in trim. Each head sits deep in its own regressed cone, which keeps the diode out of normal sight lines and cuts the glare you get from a flush lens.
Can each head be aimed separately?
Yes. All three tilt and rotate on their own, so one fixture can hold three different aiming angles at once. Measured beam runs 34.4 to 35.6 degrees across the five colour temperatures, taken from the fixture's own IES files rather than the round number on the sheet. That's an accent beam. Use it to pick things out, and pair it with wider optics for ambient fill.
Does recessed lighting have to be symmetrical?
No, and a three-head bar is the easy way out of that argument. The outer head centres sit 7-1/4in apart on a fixed axis, so you get an even triple from one opening instead of laying out three separate cut-outs, three separate holes in the vapour barrier and three chances to end up 20mm off a joist.
What it takes to fit one
Cut 3-3/4in by 10-7/8in, and leave 3-1/8in of depth behind the ceiling for the heads. The driver lives in a remote junction box measuring 6-1/8in by 4-5/8in by 1-5/8in, so there's no housing can to buy, but that box still has to land somewhere reachable in the plenum. It's Type IC and air tight, rated -4°F to 104°F, and certified for indoor use. Dimming is Triac down to 10%, with Lutron DVCL-153P, Leviton IPL06-10Z and Cooper SI06P among the controls Votatec has tested against it.
