What is a retrofit pot light?
It's a sealed LED trim that replaces the old bulb and the old trim together, inside the recessed can already in your ceiling. Kill the breaker, pull the existing trim, thread the E26 adapter into the socket, join the two connectors, squeeze the spring clips and push it up flush. Six steps per opening, from below, no attic access.
What are pot lights called now?
Pot light, can light, downlight and recessed light all name the same fixture. Canadian contractors say pot light. Spec sheets and submittals say downlight. This one's catalogued as a 4" retrofit downlight, and it's what you'd be quoted on if you asked for 4-inch retrofit pot lights.
Are retrofit pot lights safe in an insulated ceiling?
This one is. ENERGY STAR lists VO-RR4W9-120-D-5WAY/WH as Type IC, so building insulation may sit against the housing. It's damp rated for indoor use, so bathrooms and covered soffits are fine and open weather isn't, and it's rated for enclosed fixtures. Not for emergency exit signage.
Will it fit the cans you've already got?
You need a 4-inch can with a standard E26 socket. The manual asks for a lamp compartment of at least 4 inches across by 5.5 inches deep, because the adapter and its cable coil above the trim, so measure one can before you order a pallet. The 5" flange covers the old cut line. It runs on 120V and dims to 10% on ELV or TRIAC controls, tested against ten Lutron and Leviton models. Set the colour on the slide switch before the trim goes up, or leave it in SWITCH mode and cycle colours from the wall switch. If a ganged row ends up mismatched, toggling that switch seven times at one-second intervals resyncs them all.
