The 4" Retrofit Gimbal is an LED recessed retrofit kit you can aim. The gimbal ring tilts on two axes, so light lands on the shelving or the artwork instead of the floor in front of it.
It draws 9W at 120V, throws a 60° beam, and renders colour above CRI 90. Five colour temperatures switch in the field, 2700K through 5000K.
Steel body, frosted lens, 2.5kV surge protection, cETLus listed, five-year warranty.
What does retrofit mean in recessed lighting?
It means replacing the light source in an opening that already exists, with no new holes and no new cable. The manual gives this fixture two ways to do that. Wire it straight to the outlet box, using the two supplied #8-32 screws through the keyholes in the housing. Or fit the E26 cap and screw it into the lampholder that's already there. Both bags ship in the box.
How long do LED retrofit recessed lights last?
This one is rated for 50,000 hours. Run 12 hours a day, that's past eleven years. Heat is what shortens a retrofit's life, and this is where the fixture separates itself: the spec sheet rates it for use in enclosed fixtures, which many retrofit modules aren't. It runs from -20°C to 40°C, so unheated garages and covered entries are inside the envelope.
Aim it after it's in the ceiling
A fixed downlight commits you at rough-in. A gimbal doesn't. The ring rotates on multiple axes and the fixture works horizontally or vertically, so one part number covers flat ceilings, sloped ceilings and wall washing. For retail shelving and gallery work that's the difference between one order and three.
What it needs to fit
The body is 5.04in across and 1.59in deep, and it wants a compartment at least that size. Set the CCT switch before you close anything up, because it sits inside the driver housing. The frosted diffuser twists off and back on, so servicing doesn't mean pulling the fixture. Power factor sits above 0.9. Dimming is ELV and TRIAC down to 10%, and the spec sheet lists 36 dimmer models the factory bench-tested, mostly Lutron, Leviton and Legrand. Older incandescent dimmers will misbehave, so check that list before you commit to a floor.
For the two mounting sequences, the tested dimmer list and the switch position, open the Manual and Spec sheet, and take the IES file if your designer needs the 2700K photometry. Send us your fixture count and ceiling type and we'll come back with a wholesale quote and a dimmer compatibility check.
