This 4" round eyeball downlight aims. The head turns a full 360° and tilts 45°, so one directional recessed light does ceiling wash and accent work on the same circuit.

12W on 120V, 38° beam. Five colour temperatures switch on the driver housing, 2700K through 5000K, with output from 1,092Lm to 1,216Lm depending which you pick.

What are directional recessed lights?

They're recessed fixtures whose light head moves, so you aim the beam instead of accepting straight down. This one turns 360° and tilts 45° off vertical. A flat panel or slim pot light can't do either. That's the difference between lighting a room and lighting the thing you want people to look at, which is why these go over a wall, a fireplace, artwork or a retail display. The 38° beam reads as a deliberate pool of light, not general fill.

What are some recessed lights that can swivel?

Eyeball and gimbal fixtures both swivel, and the trade uses the names loosely. An eyeball seats the head inside the trim ring and rotates it like a ball in a socket, which is what this one does. A gimbal pivots on a yoke. The practical difference: an eyeball keeps a flush trim face when you aim it, so you get less visible aperture and less off-axis glare than a gimbal at the same tilt.

What is the hole size for a 4 inch pot light?

For this fixture, 3.93" (100mm), per the installation manual. Trim diameter is 4.72" (120mm), so the ring covers 0.79" of ceiling around the opening. Fixture height is 1.73" (44mm). Cut with a 4" hole saw and you're within tolerance.

Does it need a housing?

No. The manual is explicit: the driver and fixture are Type IC rated for direct contact with insulation, and a pot light housing isn't required even in insulated ceilings. ENERGY STAR confirms the Type IC rating independently. The Class 2 driver ships factory-installed in its own junction box on a 14.5" (370mm) lead, and every fixture needs its own driver. Damp rated, so bathrooms and covered soffits are fine. Dims 10% to 100% on ELV and TRIAC, with 36 tested Lutron, Leviton and Legrand dimmers listed.
