This is the only 4-inch gimbal in the Votatec range tested to a full 2-hour fire rating under UL 263, ASTM E119 and CAN/ULC S101. You still get to aim it after the ceiling's closed.
10W draws 820 certified lumens at 82 lm/W, with five colour temperatures you set at the switch before install: 2700K, 3000K, 3500K, 4000K, 5000K. CRI 84.
cETL listed, IC rated, ENERGY STAR certified, damp location. Five-year warranty.
What are fire-rated pot lights?
They're recessed fixtures tested inside a full-scale floor-ceiling assembly, so cutting them into a rated ceiling doesn't void its rating. This one holds two hours. Most canless wafer lights hold none, and dropping one into a rated ceiling quietly breaks the assembly unless you add a fire box over the top. Votatec's model number for it is VO-GRP4W10-120-D-5WAY-FR.
Do recessed lights need to be fire rated?
Only where the ceiling itself carries a fire-resistance rating. That's the suite-separating ceiling in a multi-unit residential build, the ceiling under an attached garage, and most commercial demising assemblies. In an ordinary single-family ceiling with nothing rated above it, you don't need one. When the assembly is rated, your options are a tested fixture like this or a separate fire box over an untested one, and the tested fixture is faster to install and easier to inspect.
Aim it after the drywall's up
The gimbal ring rotates and tilts, so you commission the beam once the room's finished instead of guessing at rough-in. Measured beam is 44 degrees with peak intensity sitting 8 degrees off centre, which is what lets it wash a wall or pick up artwork rather than just dropping a pool on the floor. Useful on sloped ceilings too.
Cut hole and junction box limits
Cut between 4-1/4" and 4-1/2" (110mm to 115mm). The fixture body needs a compartment of at least 4.9" by 1.8". Set the CCT slide switch before the fixture goes up, because you can't reach it afterward. One limit worth knowing before you run a row: the junction box takes a maximum of two line feeds, so plan the daisy chain around that.
For the CCT switch positions, the wiring sequence and the spring-clip method, open the Manual (PDF), and pull the IES file if your designer needs the candela distribution. Send us your fixture count and the ceiling assembly you're cutting into, and we'll come back with a wholesale quote and confirm the cut-hole size for your build.
