This 4" pot light runs indirect. The LEDs fire up into a dome inside the housing, so what you see is lit ceiling, not a bright diode. Glare drops. The look stays soft.

What's the difference between direct and indirect lighting?
A direct downlight aims its LEDs straight at the floor, so you see the source when you look up. This one doesn't. The diodes fire into an interior dome and the light reaches the room as a reflection. That's what kills the glare. The spread runs past 120 degrees, so falloff between fixtures stays gentle.
What are the pros and cons of indirect lighting?
The upside is no hot spot and no pinpoint reflection off a glossy counter, a whiteboard or a monitor. The ceiling reads evenly lit.
The downside is output. Bouncing light off a dome costs lumens, and the lab files show it: about 61 lumens per watt at 4000K, where Votatec's direct 4" panel certifies at 84.4. You're buying the dome, not the efficacy. In a hotel corridor or a clinic waiting room that's the right trade. In a warehouse it isn't.
What's the hole size for a 4" pot light?
Cut 4", or 102mm. The trim measures 4-3/4" across, so you get roughly 3/8" of cover all round and a hole that runs wide still disappears.
Depth catches more people out than diameter. The fixture needs a compartment at least 4-3/4" by 1-3/8", so measure joist space before ordering a retrofit. It's rated for enclosed fixtures, and the quick connector saves stripping wire at the ceiling.
Which dimmers work with it?
It's ELV and TRIAC, dimming 10 to 100 percent. Votatec has bench-tested 33 dimmers across Lutron, Leviton and Legrand, and the list is in the spec sheet. Older incandescent dimmers will flicker or buzz, so match to the tested list instead of whatever's on the wall. Some dimmers need more than one fixture on the circuit to hold steady at the bottom.
