Are smart pot lights worth it?
On a retrofit, yes, when one fixture replaces both the light and its control. This panel carries its own driver and junction box, so there's no separate dimmer leg and no hub to mount. One 120V feed, one quick connector, done. Scheduling, colour and grouping run in the Smart Life app or through Alexa and Google Assistant. Standby draw is 0.5W per head, so budget about 4.4 kWh a year per fixture when idle.
How long do LED pot lights typically last?
This one is certified to 60,000 hours, not the 50,000 the older spec sheet prints. At 12 hours a day that's about 13 years. The 5 year warranty covers the housing, optics and electronics.
Can you dim it from a wall dimmer?
No, and it's worth catching before you quote. ENERGY STAR lists this model's dimming as wireless, and it's the only fixture in Votatec's certified downlight range flagged that way. Every other model reads "continuously dimmable". Wire it to a plain switch and dim in the app. A TRIAC wall dimmer isn't a supported pairing, so don't spec one beside it.
Will it fit the hole that's already there?
Cut between 4-1/4" and 4-1/2", so 110mm to 115mm, per the installation manual. The trim spans 4.9" and sits 0.98" deep. The driver box is 3.3" x 3.3" x 1.2" and accepts a maximum of two line feeds, which caps how many heads you can chain from one box. Compress the springs one at a time going in, and kill the breaker before you start.
