The 4" Slim Multi Recessed LED goes in three ways from one part number. Screw it straight to a junction box, drop it into an existing can, or clip it into a bare cut-out hole. No bracket, no housing.

What is the hole size for a 4 inch pot light?
For this one, there isn't a single answer, and that's the point. The fixture is 126mm (4.96") across and 26.6mm (1.05") deep, and the manual shows three ways to get it up: screwed straight to a junction box, pushed into an existing can housing, or clipped into a cut-out hole on its spring clips. It'll also surface mount. Allow a compartment of at least 4.96 x 4.96 x 1.02 inches behind the ceiling.
Retrofit work is where that pays. You aren't matching the old can, so a floor of mismatched 1990s housings becomes one line item.
Should I do 4 inch or 6 inch recessed lights?
Four inch suits hallways, closets, kitchen perimeters and anywhere you want tighter spacing without hot spots. This fixture measures 654 lumens at 2700K, 731 at 3500K and 741 at 4000K, tested by Everfine, with a 107 degree beam that holds within a degree across all five colour temperatures. Need more output per opening, go to the 6" slim panel instead.
Where can you install it?
Damp locations, indoors. The manual is explicit on both, and the ENERGY STAR downlight register lists it Indoor, damp rated. Covered ceilings, bathrooms and soffits under cover are fine. Exposed exterior isn't.
Two more things the spec panel won't tell you. It's Non-IC, so don't let insulation touch the housing. And it is rated for enclosed fixtures, which most slim downlights aren't.
Which dimmers work with it?
It's a Triac driver dimming 10 to 100%, and the dimming cables ship in the box. Votatec has tested seven: Lutron MACL-153MR-WH, SCL-153P-WH, PD-6WCL-WH, CTCL-153P-WH, MSCL-OP153M-WH and DVCL-153P-WH, plus Leviton 6672-1LW. Older incandescent dimmers will flicker. The white trim's included, black and silver order separately, and they're magnetic so there's no screw to fumble overhead.
