Is IC rated the same as fire rated?
No. They're two different tests, and this fixture passes both.
IC means insulation contact: the housing can sit against ceiling insulation with no clearance gap. Fire rated means the ceiling assembly keeps its rating after you cut a hole in it, verified here to UL 263, ASTM E119 and CAN/ULC-S101 for two hours.
Airtight is a third rating again. ENERGY STAR records this model as Type IC Airtight, UPC 628068648714, and most pot lights sold as "IC rated" stop at plain IC.
Can you put insulation over IC-rated recessed lights?
Yes, on this one. Type IC Airtight means insulation can be packed straight against the housing, and the airtight rating means it won't bleed heated air into the attic.
That matters for the ceilings this fixture is built for. A 2-hour assembly usually sits under insulation, and a non-IC unit needs a 3-inch clearance gap that breaks the thermal barrier and the fire barrier at the same time.
What 10W actually delivers
820 lumens, certified, at CRI 85 and a 0.98 power factor. ENERGY STAR rates the life at 60,000 hours, not the 50,000 most slim pot lights quote.
Commodity 4-inch fire-rated units typically run 750 to 810 lumens at CRI 80 and 50,000 hours. Built-in 2.5kV surge protection rarely shows up at this size.
What size hole does a 4" pot light need?
104mm, or 4.1 inches. The trim covers 4.92 inches, so you get about 10mm of overlap per side.
Depth is where slim fixtures catch people out. This one stands 1.69 inches tall and the spec sheet asks for a clear compartment of 4.9 by 1.7 inches, so measure the joist bay before you cut. It mounts horizontal or vertical, runs from -20°C to 40°C, weighs 0.58 lbs, and it's rated for enclosed fixtures.
