What is an IC rated pot light?
An IC rated pot light can touch ceiling insulation without becoming a fire risk. IC stands for insulation contact. ENERGY STAR certifies this fixture as Type IC, so you don't need a clearance box or to rake insulation back in an attic or top-floor ceiling. A non-IC fixture needs clear air space all round it. On an insulated ceiling that's a 10-minute install instead of an afternoon.
Do IC rated pot lights need a vapour barrier?
IC rating and vapour barrier are two separate things. IC means insulation can touch the housing. A vapour barrier stops warm indoor air carrying moisture up into a cold attic. This fixture is airtight rated, which cuts the air leak at the trim itself, but whether you still need a sealed box at the junction is a local code question. Ask your inspector. The fixture handles its half of it.
Five colour temperatures, set before it goes up
Move the slide switch to 2700K, 3000K, 3500K, 4000K or 5000K before you push the fixture into the ceiling. One SKU covers a warm living room and a cool garage, so you stock one box instead of five. Output climbs with the colour: 820 lumens at 2700K, 950 at 4000K. Dimming runs 10% to 100% on ELV and TRIAC, and the spec sheet lists tested Lutron and Leviton models.
Cut-out size and ceiling depth
Cut a round hole between 4-1/4 and 4-1/2 inches (110mm to 115mm), even though the trim is square. Leave 12 inches of line feed wire and strip 5/8 inch. The slim body needs 0.98 inches behind the ceiling, the airtight 1.65, so measure before you pick one. The junction box takes two line feeds maximum, which caps how far a run can daisy-chain.
