What are the downsides of using motion sensor lights?
The timer, usually. This one holds for 30 seconds after the last movement and that delay isn't adjustable, which suits a closet, a pantry or a stair landing but not a desk. It won't dim either. The sensor reads motion across a 110 degree cone, 3 to 5 m out, from a mounting height of about 3 m.
What type of light is best for closets?
An enclosed LED, and Canadian code is specific about where you put it. CEC Rule 30-204 wants 300 mm (12 in.) between a surface-mounted luminaire and the nearest storage space, or 150 mm (6 in.) if the fixture is recessed. This one installs both ways, so the clearance you need depends on the method you choose. The sealed lens satisfies the completely-enclosed requirement either way.
Two ways to mount it, one without new wiring
Hardwire it to a junction box with the supplied bracket, screws and wire connectors. Or pull the trim off an existing recessed can, thread the included E26 adapter into the lampholder, and clip the fixture in behind it. Set the colour temperature before you go up. The slide switch sits on the back of the housing and you can't reach it once the fixture is mounted.
Where it fits, and where it doesn't
Damp location listing covers bathrooms, laundry rooms and covered entries. It isn't rated for open outdoor exposure. The fixture carries a -40C to 50C operating range but the sensor module is rated to -30C, so an unheated prairie garage sits at the edge of spec. There's no dimming and no hold-time adjustment, so put it on a switched circuit, not a dimmer.
