The 6" disk light does two jobs. Drop it into an existing recessed can, or mount it straight to a junction box where no can exists. It's 1.35" deep either way.

What are LED disk lights?

A disk light is a shallow round LED fixture that mounts flat to the ceiling instead of hanging inside a recessed housing. It solves the case where you want the look of a pot light but the ceiling has no can, or has a can you'd rather not pull out. At 1.35" deep this one sits close enough to read as recessed from the floor.

Are 6 inch recessed lights too big?

For an 8ft residential ceiling, 6" is the standard general-lighting size and 4" is the accent size. The 6.85" outer diameter here covers a standard 6" can cut-out with room to spare, which is what makes it a clean retrofit. Drop to the 4" model for tighter spacing, closets and hallways.

How to replace an LED disc light or a dead can fixture

Kill the breaker first. Screw the mounting bracket to the ceiling junction box with the two supplied screws, join the wires with wire nuts, push the connections back into the box, then seat the fixture on the bracket and restore power. It's a four-step job, and it's the same sequence whether you're replacing an old disc light or converting a bare junction box.

Where it fits, and where it doesn't

The fixture mounts to a 4" or 6" junction box. Rated operating range is -20 to +40C, so unheated garages and covered exterior soffits are inside spec.

Two limits worth reading before you order. Don't cover it with insulation, per the fire-prevention caution in the manual, so it isn't a fit for a direct-contact insulated ceiling. And the LED board and driver aren't field-serviceable, so don't plan on swapping either.
