What's the best wattage for chandelier bulbs?
For most chandeliers, 3W to 6W a lamp is plenty. This 9W is for the cases where it isn't: high ceilings, wide dining rooms, hotel and lobby fixtures, or a chandelier carrying three or four sockets instead of eight. It's the brightest E12 candle in the Votatec range, tested at 968 lumens in 3000K and 1025 lumens in 4000K. The 5.5W candle gives 600 lumens and the 3.8W clear gives 300, so you're getting roughly 1.6x and 3.2x the output from the same socket.
Can LED bulbs be used in a chandelier?
Yes, and this one dims. The filament throws a full 360 degrees, so it reads correctly in an exposed-bulb fixture where a narrow-beam lamp would leave a dark cap at the top. Votatec tests it against named controls: Leviton 6681, 6674 and 6683, plus Lutron DVCL-153PLH, S600-P, DV600-P15 and MACL-153M. Pair it with an untested dimmer and you're risking flicker at the bottom of the range.
How long does it last?
Rated life is 15,000 hours. It also ships with 2.5kV surge protection as standard and a 3 year warranty. That combination earns its keep where relamping is awkward. On a stairwell chandelier or a two-storey foyer, the lift costs more than the lamps do, so a surge event that takes out four bulbs is a scheduling problem, not a supply one.
When should you not use this bulb?
Don't put it in an enclosed fixture. Votatec rates it No for enclosed use, and 9W inside a glass envelope has real heat to shed. Sealed globes, closed sconces and covered ceiling fittings will run it hot and cut the life short. Check your socket clearance as well. It's 4.61 in (117 mm) tall and 1.65 in (42 mm) across, and it's rated IP20 for dry indoor use between -20 and 40 degrees C.
