What is a G40 bulb?
G40 means a globe 40 eighths of an inch across, so five inches. This one measures 4.92 in (125 mm) in diameter and 6.30 in (160 mm) tall on an E26 base.
That matters because "G40" gets used for two different lamps in Canada. Search it and you'll mostly find 1.5 in bulbs on an E12 candelabra base, sold in packs of 25 for patio string lights. This isn't that. It's the large decorative globe for pendants, bathroom vanities, and exposed-fixture work.
Are G40 and E26 the same?
No. G40 is the shape and the size. E26 is the screw base, 26 mm across, the standard Canadian medium socket. This bulb is both, which is why it drops straight into a normal lamp holder.
If you need something smaller in the same family, G25 is 3.125 in and G30 is 3.75 in.
Clear or milky?
Clear glass shows the four vertical filaments, so pick it where the bulb is part of the look. Milky diffuses the source and hides the filament, which suits a fixture at eye level.
Two practical differences beyond appearance. Clear is the only finish offered in 4000K, and it's brighter: 1,124 lm against 1,016 lm at 3000K, both at 9W.
Where it fits, and where it won't
Check three things before you order.
It isn't rated for enclosed fixtures. Trapped heat shortens filament life, so skip sealed globes and closed jars. Second, measure your shade for 6.30 in of height. Third, it's IP20 and dry location only, though it runs from -20°C to 40°C if the site is cold but covered.
Rated at 15,000 hours with 2.5kV surge protection built in. Dimming is verified on Leviton 6681, 6674 and 6683, and on Lutron DVCL-153PLH, S600-P, DV600-P15 and MACL-153M.
