Set the plates on the joists, let the drywallers cut to them, snap the light in after. Also stocked without the lip.
What is a pot light mounting plate?
On site you'll hear it called a smash plate, a rough-in plate or a pre-mounting plate. Same part. It's a steel bracket that fixes where a recessed light goes before the ceiling closes up. Screw the plate to the joists at your layout points. Your drywallers hang the ceiling and cut or router the hole using the plate's opening as the guide. The light snaps in once the drywall's done. No measuring off finished board, no hunting for the joist afterward.
What's the best rough-in plate for pot lights?
The one that matches the fixture you've already specified. This plate has a 4-1/4" round opening, so it takes round 4" ultra-thin recessed lights. A square trim needs a square cutout and won't seat in it. Votatec stocks the same plate in 2", 3", 3.5" combo and 6" sizes.
With lip, or without?
Both 4" models share one blank, one material and one opening size. The difference is the collar formed around the opening on this model. Everything else, including the ruler edges, is identical. If the spec calls for a flat plate, order the PL-4" instead.
Why the ruler edges matter on a big ceiling
Two sides of every plate carry a stamped ruler. On a forty-light ceiling that's one layout pass instead of a second trip with a tape. Mark the joist, set the plate, read the spacing straight off the edge. It's the detail that separates these from a plain punched blank, and it's why they go in fast on tract work.
