What can I do if my recessed light hole is too big?
Cut it right the first time, because a no-lip plate won't hide an oversize opening. That's the argument for fixing the plate up before the ceiling closes. Your drywaller runs the cut-out tool against the plate's 6.5" steel edge instead of a pencil circle, so every opening on the floor comes out the same size in the same spot. If a hole is already cut too wide, you're into a lipped plate, an oversize trim, or a patch. The 6" plate ships without a lip.
How do you lay out pot lights before drywall?
Plates go up first, at the locations on your drawing. The manual's order is: mount the plates, let the drywallers cut and router the openings using each plate as the guide, then snap the light into place once the drywall's finished. Two visits instead of four. And there's a printed inch scale along the plate edge, so a helper can measure off the last plate rather than pulling tape from the wall at every fixture.
Why the 13.22 inch footprint matters
The plate measures 13.22" x 9.06". Joists framed 16" on centre leave about 14.5" clear, so the plate drops into a bay without anyone trimming it on site. The width holds steady across the whole plate range, 2" through 6", which means one layout habit no matter which apertures are on the drawing.
Which lights does it fit?
Six-inch ultra-thin recessed LED, the snap-in kind. Not can housings. The opening is 6.5" and Votatec's 6" slim panel carries a 7" trim, so the flange covers the cut with room to spare. New construction only, because the sequence needs the plate in before the ceiling closes. Smaller apertures have their own plate, 2" through 4", and the 4" comes both lipped and unlipped.
