What's the difference between an ST14 and an S14 bulb?
Physically, almost nothing. Both codes describe a bulb 14 eighths of an inch across, about 1.75 in, and both use an E26 medium base here. The letters describe the profile only: S is straight sided, ST is straight tubular, so an ST14 drops into a socket built for S14. Suppliers use the two codes interchangeably, and marketplaces mix them in the same search results. Check the diameter and the base before you order, not the letters.
Can you use this bulb in outdoor string lights?
No. It's rated IP20, which covers dry indoor locations only, and the spec sheet lists it as not rated for enclosed fixtures. That's worth saying plainly, because the ST14 and S14 shape is mostly sold for bistro and patio strings, and those runs sit in damp or wet locations. Specify a wet-rated lamp for anything outside. Keep this one for interior pendants, open sconces and café fixtures under a roof. The spec table gives an operating range of -25°C to 40°C.
Why milky glass instead of clear
Clear filament glass shows you the filament. That's the look people buy, and it's also a small, very bright source that glares when the bulb sits near eye level, over a counter, in a stairwell or under a low pendant. The milky coating spreads the same output across the whole envelope. You keep the vintage shape and the warm 3000K tone, and you lose the hotspot. Votatec builds the clear version to the same 5.5W spec when the exposed filament is the point.
Dimming, power and warranty
It dims, on a tested list: Leviton 6681, 6674 and 6683, plus Lutron DVCL-153PLH, S600-P, DV600-P15 and MACL-153M. Stay on that list. The bulb runs at 120V, 50-60Hz, carries 2.5kV surge protection as standard, is ETL listed by Intertek and is rated for 15,000 hours with a 3-year warranty.
For the full dimmer list, the surge rating and the 45mm by 80mm envelope, open the Spec sheet (PDF) in the Related documents panel.
