The DA-88-12WA-1 is an 88W low voltage landscape lighting transformer. It steps 120V line power down to 12V AC, and a built-in photocell and timer switch the run, so there's no separate control to wire.
88W output. 12V AC at 7.3 amps. Six settings: off, on, dusk-to-dawn auto, and 4, 6 or 8 hour timers.
Black plastic housing, weatherproof, UL certified, 0.7m cord, 1 year warranty.
How many lights can an 88W transformer run?
Add up the wattage of every fixture on the circuit. The total can't exceed 88W.
At 3W per fixture that's 29 lights. At 5W, 17. At 7W, 12. Most LED path, spot and step fixtures sit between 3W and 7W, so 88W covers a small to mid-size residential job.
Leave headroom for what the client adds next spring.
What cable gauge do you need, and how far can it run?
The manual sets minimums by load and distance, not by fixture count.
Up to 60W of connected load, 16 AWG carries the full 100 ft, and 14 AWG takes you to 150 ft. Between 61W and the 88W ceiling, 16 AWG is good to 50 ft, 14 AWG to 100 ft, and 12 AWG to 150 ft. Heavier cable than the minimum gives you better output at the far end of the run.
Run the wire from the transformer to each fixture without cutting it, and keep the first fixture 10 ft out.
Setting the timer
One dial covers six positions. OFF and ON override the photocell either way. AUTO runs dusk to dawn, switching on once the sensor reads darkness for 30 seconds.
The three timer settings, 4, 6 and 8 hours, start at dusk and repeat every 24 hours. This unit runs fixed durations, not a 1 to 9 hour range.
If an overload trips the breaker, clear the fault, wait four minutes, then press reset.
Where it mounts, and what it needs
It hangs on a single screw and sits at least 12 inches above grade, plugged into a GFCI receptacle with a watertight cover that an electrician installs. Keep it 10 ft from any pool, spa or fountain, and off combustible material.
No dimmers. No extension cords. Don't parallel two units. Rated -10 to 40 °C, so check winter siting on year-round installs.
