The RIO FS00493 pairs a decorative outdoor wall lantern with a 220-degree PIR motion sensor and a dusk-to-dawn photocell, both built into the sensor head.
One E26 socket. The sensor takes 60W incandescent or 45W LED, with a 32.8 ft detection range and a 2-minute hold. Steel frame, tempered glass, matte black.
ETL listed for wet locations, rated -30°C to 50°C, 3-year warranty. Bulb isn't included.
Do I need an electrician to install a sensor light?
Usually yes. The FS00493 hardwires to a 120V junction box, so there's no plug-in option and the box isn't supplied. You'll join live, neutral and ground, landing the ground on the preinstalled green screw in the mounting unit. One step that gets skipped: the manual asks for caulk between the back plate and the wall so water can't track in behind the fixture.
What are the common problems with outdoor motion lights?
Siting causes most of them, not the sensor. Mount the head 1.8m to 2.2m above grade. Skip west-facing walls, where low evening sun holds the photocell open and the light starts late. Street lamps and nearby fixtures do the same. A deep porch or eave creates the reverse fault and the lamp fires in daylight. Keep 2m of clearance from WiFi routers and cameras.
How the two-step sensor saves energy
There's a 15-second warm-up, then TEST mode, then AUTO about 2 minutes later. In AUTO the lamp holds 40% brightness from dusk, climbs to 100% on detection, and settles back roughly 2 minutes after the area clears. That standby step is where the saving sits, because the fixture never burns full output all night. A key switch on the head flips it to single-step, off until triggered. Manual override holds 100% for 8 hours.
Bulb and dimmer limits worth checking first
Two limits live in the manual and nowhere on this page. The sensor accepts an LED lamp up to 45W, and the 60W figure covers incandescent only. Second, the sensor input won't take a dimmer and has to run straight off line voltage. Detection is sharpest across the beam and weakest walking straight at it, which decides where you aim it.
