What are pot lights called now?

Pot light, recessed light, downlight and can light all describe the same fixture. Canadian contractors say pot light. Spec sheets and manufacturers say downlight, which is why this product is catalogued as the 2" Square Baffle Downlight, model VO-SP2W8-120-D-5WAY. Baffle refers to the stepped inner cone that traps stray light and cuts glare at the aperture.

How far apart should 2 inch pot lights be?

Spacing follows the beam angle and the drop to whatever you're lighting. At 34 degrees, this fixture throws a pool roughly two-thirds as wide as that drop. Over a counter 5 ft below the ceiling, that's about a 3 ft circle, so centres at 3 ft give you an even wash and centres at 4 ft give you scallops. Load the IES file into your layout software before you commit to a grid.

IC rated and airtight for insulated ceilings

You can bury this one. IC rated means the housing may sit in direct contact with thermal insulation, and the airtight construction stops conditioned air leaking into the attic through the aperture. FT4-rated wire covers the CSA flame-spread requirement Canadian inspectors check. It's also rated for enclosed fixtures, and it runs from -20C to 40C.

Will it fit your ceiling?

Check these numbers before ordering. The cut-out on the dimensional drawing is 2-13/16" (72mm), the trim measures 3-1/8" across, and the fixture needs a compartment of at least 3-1/8" x 2-3/8". Depth is 2-3/8". The driver sits in a separate connection box on a quick connector, so the fixture mounts horizontally or vertically and the CCT switch hides inside the driver housing. Dimming is TRIAC, 10 to 100 percent, across 38 tested Lutron, Leviton and Legrand models. Wet location and IP54 cover bathrooms and covered exteriors.
