What does IC rated recessed lighting mean?
IC stands for insulation contact. A Type IC fixture can sit in direct contact with ceiling insulation without creating a fire risk, so it needs no clearance box and no gap held open in the batts. This eyeball is certified Type IC under ENERGY STAR as model VO-GRP3W8-120-D-5WAY. It's air tight too, so conditioned air doesn't leak past the trim into the attic.
What's the difference between IC and non-IC recessed lights?
A non-IC luminaire traps heat, so the Canadian Electrical Code makes you keep thermal insulation 76mm (3in) away from the housing, driver and wiring compartment. That gap is exactly where your building envelope leaks. Type IC removes it. On a retrofit above an insulated ceiling, that's the difference between cutting the hole and moving on, or shielding every can by hand.
Pick the colour temperature on site
The switch sits inside the driver housing, so one part number covers 2700K, 3000K, 3500K, 4000K and 5000K. Output isn't flat across that range. Tested output runs 517.8Lm at 2700K up to 671.7Lm at 5000K, so do your lumen math on the temperature you're actually setting. Warm settings give up real output.
Will it fit, and which dimmer works?
Cut a 2-7/8" (72mm) hole. The trim covers at 3-1/2" (85mm), the fixture needs 2" (46mm) of depth, and the driver sits in a separate remote box on a quick connector, so plan plenum room for both. TRIAC dimming runs 10% to 100%. Votatec bench-tested 33 dimmers across Lutron, Leviton and Legrand. Older incandescent dimmers will flicker.
