What is a gimbal pot light?
A gimbal pot light is a recessed fixture whose light engine pivots inside its trim, so you point the beam instead of accepting a straight-down wash. This one tilts 30° and rotates a full 360°. That's what you want over artwork, a kitchen island, or any sloped ceiling where a fixed pot light aims at the wrong spot. The square trim sits flush while the inner ring moves.
Gimbal pot light or slim panel?
Choose the gimbal when the light has a target. Choose a slim panel when it doesn't. A panel spreads a wide, even wash for general room lighting. The gimbal gives up some of that spread for a tighter 34° beam you can aim, which is why it reads as accent lighting, not ambient. Most jobs use both: panels across the field, gimbals over what's worth looking at.
Does it need a housing in an insulated ceiling?
No. It's Type IC rated and approved for direct contact with insulation, so no pot light housing is required even in an insulated ceiling. Cut a 4-1/4" (108mm) hole, feed the driver's junction box through, then let the spring clips pull the trim up tight. The trim needs 1-1/2" (35mm) of depth and the driver box wants roughly 5" by 11.2". Leave that box unattached so a service call can pull it back down. It's damp rated and indoor listed, so a bathroom ceiling is fine and an exposed soffit isn't.
How many fixtures share a driver or a dimmer?
One fixture per driver, always. Never wire two fixtures to a single driver and never swap in a driver that didn't ship with the light. Fixtures daisy-chain instead, on 6ft and 20ft jumpers, with total run capped at 40ft (12m). Dimming runs 10 to 100 percent on TRIAC across 33 tested dimmers.
