What is a retrofit pot light?
It's an LED trim that screws into the socket of a can you've already got. No new housing, no rewiring, no drywall work. Pull the old bulb and trim ring, thread the E26 adapter into the empty socket, snap the quick-connect together, squeeze the torsion springs and push the trim up flush. Ten minutes a can. The ceiling stays intact, which is the whole point on an occupied building.
Will it fit a 5 inch can or a 6 inch can?
Both, out of the same box. The torsion springs mount in two positions on the body. Leave them where they ship and it seats in a 6" housing. For a 5" housing, unscrew each spring and move it to the inner mounting hole. That's the entire adjustment.
That's why this is the one to stock when you're quoting a building with mixed-vintage cans. Most retrofit trims force you to buy both diameters and eat whatever you guessed wrong on.
Are retrofit pot lights safe in an insulated ceiling?
The manual clears this trim for both Type IC and non-IC housings, so insulation sitting against the can isn't a problem. It's rated for damp locations, which covers a covered porch, a laundry room, or a bathroom ceiling outside the shower zone. Keep it indoors.
How much light lands on the floor?
The manual's distribution table measures 8 foot-candles directly below the trim at an 8 foot mount, spread across a 19 foot diameter. On a standard 9 foot residential ceiling that's comfortable general lighting at roughly 6 to 8 feet on centre. Set the colour before you install: 2700K for living space, 4000K for kitchens and offices, 5000K for garages and workshops.
