Cut a hole in a rated ceiling and you've broken its fire separation. This 6-inch fire rated pot light puts the rating back, tested to CAN/ULC-S101, UL 263 and ASTM E119 for two hours.

What are fire-rated pot lights?
A fire rated pot light keeps a ceiling's fire separation intact after you've cut a hole in it. An ordinary recessed fixture leaves an opening fire and smoke travel straight through. This one is tested to CAN/ULC-S101, the Canadian fire-resistance standard, plus UL 263 and ASTM E119, and holds two hours.
Passing that test isn't always the whole job. Some authorities still want the penetration firestopped separately, so confirm the assembly listing with your AHJ.
Do recessed lights need to be fire rated?
Only where the ceiling itself carries a fire-resistance rating. That answer decides most of your order.
You'll need them under a suite above, in demising assemblies, corridors, service rooms and attached garages. A bungalow's living-room ceiling usually carries no rating at all. Contractors get caught both ways: rated fixtures for the whole house, or standard ones in the rated part.
13W, and every watt of it is certified
Most 6-inch fire rated units at this output pull 15W. This one is certified at 13W for the same 1,100 lm, 85 lm/W on the ENERGY STAR register, not a factory estimate. Across a 200-fixture multi-res job that's 400W of connected load you don't pay for, and it's the number that moves a rebate application.
Output isn't flat across the five settings either, it climbs from 2700K to 4000K.
What fits, and what doesn't
Type IC means insulation can sit against the housing, so it drops into an insulated ceiling with no standoff. Damp rated covers bathrooms and covered soffits. It isn't wet rated, so keep it out of direct spray.
Set the colour temperature on the slide switch before the fixture goes up. You can't reach it afterwards.
Dimming is line voltage, tested with ten Lutron and Leviton models down to 10%. Pair it with an older incandescent dimmer and you'll get flicker.
