What does ACWU90 stand for?

ACWU90 stands for Armoured Cable, Wet location, Underground, rated 90°C. The name is the spec. A PVC sheath over the interlocked aluminum armour is what earns the "WU", so the cable can run in damp and wet locations, outdoors, in ventilated or ladder-type cable tray, encased in concrete, or buried directly in earth where the inspection authority allows it.

ACWU90 vs Teck90: which one does the job need?

Both are 90°C armoured cables recognised under the Canadian Electrical Code, and both handle wet and buried runs. Construction separates them. ACWU90 puts the PVC sheath straight over the armour. Teck90 adds an inner jacket beneath the armour plus an outer jacket, so it's tougher, heavier and stiffer to pull. Teck90 is built to CSA C22.2 No. 131 and belongs in heavy industrial plants, mines and hazardous locations. ACWU90 is built to CSA C22.2 No. 51 and suits commercial, residential and light industrial feeders. It's lighter and costs less per metre. They aren't interchangeable, so check the drawings before substituting.

How is ACWU90 different from AC90?

Location rating and conductor material. Our AC90 building cable runs copper and is rated for dry locations only, in #14 through #8. ACWU90 runs AA-8000 aluminum, adds the PVC sheath for wet and underground service, and scales to feeder sizes: 6/3c, 4/3c, 2/3c, 1/3c, 4/0/3c and 250 MCM/3c. Use AC90 for dry interior branch circuits. Use ACWU90 once the run leaves the building.

Terminating AA-8000 aluminum

Use connectors listed for aluminum. AA-8000 conductors need lugs rated for the alloy, usually marked AL9CU or AL7CU, and many connector makers call for an oxide inhibitor at the joint. Read the connector instructions and torque to the stated value. Bad terminations cause most aluminum feeder callbacks.
