Product Overview

LVT stands for Low Voltage Thermostat, and that's what this cable does: 30V Class 2 control circuits behind thermostats, doorbells, chimes and alarm panels.

Solid bare copper conductors, PVC insulation, brown PVC jacket, 60 °C maximum. Stocked in 18/2, 18/3, 18/4, 18/5 and 18/6 on 75 m and 150 m reels.

Certified to CSA C22.2 No. 35:20. Wholesale quantities, quoted for the trade.

What is an LVT cable?

LVT is Low Voltage Thermostat cable, an extra-low-voltage control cable rated 30V and 60 °C. It carries a signal between a thermostat and the equipment it controls. It doesn't carry power to a load. Canada certifies it under CSA C22.2 No. 35, the standard covering extra-low-voltage control circuit cable. It isn't building wire, so it never substitutes for NMD90 or AC90 on a 120V circuit.

Which conductor count do you need?

Count the terminals on the equipment, then add one spare. A heat-only furnace runs on 18/2. Add fan control and you're at 18/3. Standard heating and cooling with a common wire takes 18/5, which is why that's the size most contractors buy by the reel. 18/4 and 18/6 cover heat pumps and multi-stage equipment. Pulling one extra conductor now costs pennies against opening a wall later.

Can you use thermostat wire for low voltage lights?

Not outdoors. LVT is a dry-location indoor cable, so it can't go underground or into wet locations on a landscape lighting run. Use LVL landscape cable for that. Indoors it's fine for extra-low-voltage signal and control work on Class 2 circuits under Section 16 of the Canadian Electrical Code, where the limits are 30 volts and 100 volt-amps.

Where it goes, and where it doesn't

Run it in dry interior spaces, 60 °C maximum. Air-handling and plenum spaces carry their own flame-spread rules, so confirm the FT rating your inspector wants before you order. Keep it out of boxes shared with line-voltage conductors unless the equipment listing permits it. Splices belong in accessible junction boxes.

For the conductor colour code, reel lengths and the flame rating on the lot we're shipping, ask sales for the current mill certificate, and confirm whether your run needs a plenum-rated cable before ordering. Send us the conductor count, the gauge and total metres and we'll come back with a wholesale quote and a stock check for your region.
