What's the LED equivalent of a 40W G9 halogen bulb?
Between 3.5W and 5W, at 400 to 500 lumens. This lamp sits at the top of that band: 4.5W for 450 to 500 lumens, or 111 lumens per watt.
Match the lumens, not the watts. A 40W G9 halogen capsule sold in Canada runs about 500 lumens and about 2,000 hours. Same light here, a ninth of the power, 25,000 hours.
Can you replace G9 halogen bulbs with LED?
Yes. The G9 base is the same two-pin fitting and the lamp runs on 120V, so it drops into the existing socket with no rewiring and no driver.
Check the dimmer first. Dimmers sized for a 40W halogen load often have a minimum load an LED can't reach, which shows up as flicker or a lamp that won't strike. Send us the model and we'll confirm the match.
When should you not use this bulb?
Don't put it in a fully enclosed fixture. The spec sheet rates this lamp not suitable for enclosed fixtures, because trapped heat cooks the driver and cuts the rated life short. It's IP20, indoor dry locations only, rated -20°C to +45°C and best at 25°C.
Sealed shades, gasketed lanterns and damp bathrooms need a different lamp. Ask and we'll point at one.
Will it fit the fixture?
17.5mm diameter, 55mm overall, of which 37.5mm is glass above the base pins. It weighs 14.7g.
Measure the cup first. LED G9 capsules usually run wider than the halogen they replace, and a tight chandelier sleeve is where that bites. This is the narrowest G9 we build; the 6W versions are 18 x 58mm.
Are G9 bulbs being discontinued in Canada?
No. Canada's 2026 prohibition covers mercury-containing fluorescent lamps, not halogen capsules, so G9 halogen is still legal to sell here. The rule people are remembering is European: the EU removed mains-voltage G9 halogen from its market on 2023-09-01.
In Canada this swap is an energy and maintenance decision, not a compliance deadline.
