What are the requirements for emergency lighting in Canada?
Emergency lighting has to come on automatically when power fails and stay lit at least 30 minutes, averaging 10 lux at floor level. Self-contained units must meet CSA C22.2 No. 141, Unit Equipment for Emergency Lighting, which sets the same floor. Some occupancy classes push it to one or two hours. This unit holds 90 minutes, clearing the baseline and the one-hour case. Check your occupancy class first, because two-hour buildings need more battery.
What does the red light on an emergency light mean?
Red means the unit has AC supply and the battery's charging. Press and hold the push-to-test switch: the red indicator goes out and both heads come on, confirming the battery drives the LEDs. Release it, the heads go dark and red returns. No red at all means the unit isn't seeing normal supply. Test 30 seconds monthly and a full 90 minutes once a year.
How high can it be mounted?
The manual caps double-head units at 21.6 ft (6.5 m). Open the bottom cover, fix it to the wall, then load the lamp body in and angle the heads. Flexible conduit only. Field leads are colour coded red for 347VAC, black for 120VAC, white for common, so one part number covers both services. Cap unused conductors with the supplied nuts.
Where this unit fits, and where it doesn't
It's damp location listed, but the manual says don't use it outdoors. Read that as indoor and covered: stairwells, corridors, back-of-house, covered parking. Keep it clear of gas and electric heaters. This unit carries no remote load, so it powers its own two heads and nothing more. Jobs needing remote heads on a shared battery want the steel battery units instead. The battery is rated four years, inside a five-year fixture warranty.
