What does NMD90 mean on wire?

NMD90 is the Canadian designation for non-metallic sheathed cable rated to 90°C. The "D" marks it as a dry-location cable, and the 90 is the conductor temperature rating in Celsius. It's built to CSA C22.2 No. 48 and rated 300V. Americans call the rough equivalent NM-B, but the two aren't interchangeable on a Canadian job. NM-B carries a lower temperature rating and it isn't CSA certified, so it won't pass an inspection here.

Is NMD90 copper or aluminum?

Both exist. This is the aluminum version, and the size range tells you why that matters. Aluminum NMD90 starts at the larger gauges, which is why we stock #6, #4 and #2 rather than #14 or #12. Copper handles the small branch circuits. Aluminum earns its place on the bigger runs, where the metal cost difference on a 150m reel is the whole reason the spec exists.

Is aluminum wiring legal in Canada?

Yes, when the conductor is AA-8000 series alloy. The trouble in the 1960s and 70s came from an earlier utility-grade alloy that crept and loosened at terminations over years of heating and cooling. AA-8000 was developed to fix exactly that. Every current-carrying conductor and the bonding conductor in this cable are AA-8000 series. One condition still applies on site: your terminations, breakers and lugs have to be rated for aluminum.
