How wide should a light fixture be over a 36 inch vanity?
Not 36 inches. Designers size a vanity fixture at 70 to 80 percent of the counter width, so this 36 inch bar belongs over a 45 to 51 inch vanity. An actual 36 inch vanity wants roughly 25 to 29 inches, which is the 24 inch square in this family. Mount either at 75 to 80 inches above the finished floor.
How many lumens do you need over a bathroom vanity?
Plan on 1500 to 2000 lumens, and this one clears it on every setting. Tested output runs 2186 lumens at 2700K up to 2337 lumens at 4000K, a swing of about 7 percent, so the room won't dim noticeably when someone picks a warmer white. Efficacy lands between 73.5 and 78.3 lumens per watt.
Why 90+ CRI matters at the mirror
Colour rendering is the spec buyers feel and never read. Above 90 CRI, skin tone and makeup read true instead of going flat or sallow, which is the entire job of a vanity light. Budget bars publish colour temperature and stay quiet about CRI.
What the install needs
Each fixture needs an octagonal junction box at least half an inch deep. The mounting bracket, canopy screws, mounting screws and three wire nuts ship in the box, and you strip 3/8 inch off the supply conductors. Dimming covers 10 to 100 percent on ELV or LED-compatible dimmers, with 36 models already tested. It's ETL listed for damp locations at IP20, so general bathroom use is fine but direct shower spray isn't, and it isn't rated for enclosed fixtures. Operating range is -20°C to 40°C, and it cleans with a dry soft cloth, no solvents.
