How many landscape lights can a 300W transformer run?
Add up the wattage of every fixture on the run. The total can't exceed 300W. At 5W per path light that's 60 fixtures, at 12W per well light it's 25. Most designers load below the cap rather than at it, because voltage drop over a long run costs brightness at the far end. Only 12V fixtures, and never two transformers wired in parallel.
What cable gauge does a 300W run need?
Votatec's manual sets 12 AWG as the minimum for a 241W to 300W load, and only over a run of 50 feet or less. Past 50 feet at full load, the manual marks it not recommended. Lighter loads reach further. A 121W to 240W load takes 12 AWG out to 100 feet, and anything under 60W runs on 16 AWG to the same distance. Size the cable to the load and the distance, not to the transformer.
Setting the photocell and timer
Three settings on the digital display. "O" holds the fixtures on. "A" switches them on at dusk and off at dawn, triggered once the sensor reads darkness for more than 30 seconds. "1" through "9" runs them for that many hours after dusk, repeating every 24 hours. Keep the unit clear of shrubs and away from other light sources, or the sensor won't trip. If the lights drop out, press the reset button to clear the breaker.
Where you can install it
Outdoor only, and it needs a GFCI receptacle with a watertight cover, fitted by a licensed electrician. Mount the transformer and the receptacle at least 12 inches above grade. Keep both at least 10 feet from a pool, spa or fountain. Don't fix it to combustible material, and don't run it through a dimmer. Bury the landscape cable no deeper than 6 inches, and never in mulch, bark or wood chips.
