Here’s the short version. Pick LED tape when the source has to disappear into a cove, a reveal or a millwork detail. Pick neon flex when the run is outdoors, gets wet, or needs to read as a visible line of light. Pick a linear strip fixture when the space needs working light and the project needs a utility rebate.
That’s the decision. The rest of this guide is the why, plus what LED strips pros actually use, how to connect them properly, and the five specs that settle the choice on a Canadian commercial job.
Because the wrong pick doesn’t fail on day one. It fails at inspection. Or eighteen months in, when a two-metre section goes dark above a lobby ceiling and nobody can reach it without a lift.

What LED Strips Do Pros Use?
Short answer: not the LED tape the roundup articles recommend.
Search “best LED tape lights” and you’ll get smart-home reels with app control and music sync. Fine for a bedroom. Nobody specs them on a commercial job.
Here’s what actually shows up on professional submittals.
24V COB LED tape in an extruded aluminum channel. Not 12V, because 24V doubles the single-feed run length. Not bare, because the channel is the heat sink.
Wet-location listed neon flex for anything outdoors. Not indoor LED tape in a “waterproof” sleeve. The listing has to come in the box, not from site assembly.
DLC-listed linear strip fixtures for ambient light. Because rebates.
Four spec details separate professional-grade LED tape from retail product:
- Binning tolerance. Spec-grade LED tape is binned to a 3-step MacAdam ellipse or tighter, so two reels from different lots match on a white wall. Cheap tape isn’t binned to anything, and you’ll see the seam.
- Published CRI and R9. Ra above 90 with R9 above 50 matters anywhere there’s skin, food, or merchandise. Retail LED tape lights quote “CRI 80+” and stop.
- A named, separately listed driver. Not a wall-wart in the box. One with its own certification, dimming protocol and stated lifetime.
- A Canadian certification mark. More on that below, because it’s the one that ends projects.
So pros pick LED tape on binning, CRI, driver and listing. Consumers pick on price per foot and app features. Two different products that happen to share a shape.
What Is LED Tape, Exactly?
LED tape is a flexible printed circuit board, usually 8mm to 12mm wide, with LEDs mounted along its length and adhesive backing on the reverse. It runs on low-voltage DC (12V or 24V) through a driver, or on line voltage through an inline rectifier. It ships on reels and it’s cuttable at marked intervals.
You’ll also see it called LED tape light, LED strip or ribbon light. Same product, and the naming is a mess because retail and spec channels never agreed on a word.
What matters is the format. LED tape is a component, not a luminaire. That single fact drives most of what follows.
SMD vs COB LED Tape
LED tape comes in two constructions, and they don’t behave the same.
SMD (surface-mount device) tape uses discrete LED packages spaced along the board. You can see individual dots. Cheaper, higher output per watt, and fine anywhere the LED tape is hidden behind a lens or a deep cove.
COB (chip-on-board) tape prints the diodes directly onto the board under a continuous phosphor gel. No visible dots. The beam is wider, roughly 180 degrees against SMD’s 120. Costs more per metre.
The rule contractors use: if anyone can see the source, or see its reflection in polished stone or glass, spend the money on COB LED tape. If it’s buried, SMD is fine.
12V, 24V and Line-Voltage LED Tape
Voltage decides how far a single feed of LED tape reaches.
- 12V LED tape tolerates roughly 5m per feed before voltage drop dims the far end
- 24V LED tape light stretches to roughly 10m per feed
- Line-voltage tape (120V) skips the driver but limits your dimming options
That distance limit is the number people forget. A 30m cove on 12V LED tape isn’t one run. It’s six runs, six home runs, and a lot more labour than the takeoff assumed.
Canadian Electrical Code Rule 8-102 caps voltage drop at 3% on a branch circuit and 5% total. Canada uses “shall,” so it’s enforceable, not advisory.
How to Connect Commercial Electric LED Strip Lights
Quick clarification first, because this search means two different things.
Commercial Electric is a house brand sold at Home Depot. If you’re holding one of those plug-in or hardwire COB kits, the methods below are what you need. If you meant “electric LED strip lights for a commercial building,” read the certification section too, because your bigger question is whether that product can legally go in at all.
Either way, the wiring is the same. LED tape connects four ways, and the brand on the reel doesn’t change any of them.
- Plug-in. The kit ships with a power supply and a barrel connector. Push it together. Fine for a display case, useless above a hard ceiling with no receptacle.
- Solderless clip connectors. A spring clip bites the copper pads at the cut line. Fast, no heat, and the weakest of the four. Clips work loose with thermal cycling, which is exactly what happens in a cove. Use them for testing, not for a ceiling you’ll never open again.
- Soldered joints with heat-shrink. The professional default for low-voltage LED tape. Tin the pad, tin the wire, join, shrink. A minute per joint, and it doesn’t come back.
- Hardwired to a driver in a box. The commercial answer. Line voltage lands in a junction box, the driver sits somewhere reachable, and low-voltage output feeds the LED tape runs.
Six rules decide whether the connection lasts:
- Cut only on the marked cut line. LED tape is wired in series groups, so cutting mid-group orphans the LEDs in that section and they stay dark. Our post on whether you can cut LED strip lights covers exactly where the marks fall.
- Get polarity right. DC LED tape has a marked positive and negative. Reverse it and nothing lights, though the tape usually survives.
- Never join two reels end to end past the rated run length. Feed the second reel from the supply instead. Daisy-chaining past the limit makes the far end go dim and orange.
- Clean the surface before the tape touches it. Isopropyl alcohol, let it flash off. And still use the channel.
- Match the connector to the tape width. An 8mm clip on 10mm LED tape makes intermittent contact that reads as flicker.
- Leave the driver reachable. It’s the mistake that costs the most.
One more thing about the plug-in kits. They’re almost all indoor-rated. Hardwiring one doesn’t upgrade its location listing, and a plug-in kit wired into a soffit is a failed inspection waiting to happen.

What Is LED Neon Flex, and When Does It Beat LED Tape?
LED neon flex is a sealed, extruded polymer jacket with LEDs inside, shaped to imitate the look of a bent glass neon tube. It’s a finished product rather than a bare board. That’s the whole point.
Where LED tape light has an exposed circuit that needs a channel or a sealed sleeve to survive anything, neon flex arrives already protected. No sleeving, no site-built waterproofing. IP65 or better, straight off the reel.
Neon flex wins on three jobs:
- Exterior architectural runs. Facade banding, parapet lines, entry canopies. Weather is the whole problem and the jacket solves it.
- Signage and wayfinding. The even, dot-free glow is the aesthetic. LED tape in a channel never quite matches it.
- Long runs with no ceiling access. Line-voltage neon flex takes one connection for a 50m roll. LED tape on 24V takes five drivers and five access points.
The trade-off is honest: neon flex is thicker, harder to hide, and typically not dimmable. Not dimmable, and the spec sheet says so plainly. If your drawing calls for dimming on an exterior line, that changes the product first.
Demand backs the exterior case, by the way. “Outdoor LED tape light” pulls around 1,300 searches a month in Canada, peaking near 2,900 every November. People go looking for outdoor LED tape lighting and mostly find indoor product.
What Is a Linear Strip Fixture?
A linear strip fixture is a complete luminaire. Housing, LED board, driver, mounting hardware, one certification label. You hang it, you wire it, you’re done.
It’s the least glamorous of the three and it wins more commercial jobs than LED tape and neon flex combined.
From our catalogue: the 4ft CCT and power selectable linear strip fixture does 12W/20W/30W/35W/40W on a field switch, five colour temperatures from 3500K to 5700K, 130 lm/W, on anything from AC120V to 347V. That’s the pitch. Not “prettier than LED tape.” Fewer parts, fewer failure points, one label an inspector recognises.
The Five Specs That Actually Decide It
Here’s where most LED tape specifications go wrong. Not on lumens. On these five.
1. IP65 Is Not a Wet-Location Listing
This one costs people money.
An IP rating is an ingress-protection test result. A location listing (dry, damp, wet) is a safety certification issued by a body accredited to evaluate the whole LED tape assembly for that environment. They’re related. They’re not the same claim, and on LED tape they come apart constantly.
Plenty of LED tape sold as “IP65 waterproof” carries no wet-location listing at all. It’ll survive a hose test in a lab and still fail an inspection on a canopy soffit, because the listing is what the inspector reads, not the IP number on the reel.
Ask for both on any LED tape submittal. On any exterior run, the submittal needs the location listing spelled out, not just an IP figure.
2. Rule 2-024 and the CE Trap
Every piece of electrical equipment installed in Ontario has to be approved. Not “should be.” Has to be.
Ontario Electrical Safety Code Rules 2-022 and 2-024 require equipment to be approved to a recognised Canadian standard before it can lawfully be advertised, sold or used in the province. The mark must come from a body accredited by the Standards Council of Canada. Look for the small “C” on cULus, cETL, CSA or cUL. Other provinces run the same logic through their own authorities.
Here’s the part that catches people: the CE mark is not recognised in Canada. It’s a manufacturer’s self-declaration, and the Electrical Safety Authority’s list of recognised certification marks says so directly.
Most cheap LED tape light on marketplace sites carries CE only. It cannot legally go into a commercial job in Ontario. We’ve watched contractors buy 40m of it, install it, and rip it out after a failed inspection. Labour twice, product twice.
3. Rebates: DLC Won’t Qualify Your Cove
This is the biggest cost swing on the whole decision, and almost nobody raises it before the LED tape is ordered.
Most Canadian and US utility rebate programmes require a product to appear on the DesignLights Consortium Qualified Products List. Roughly 70% of nearly 700 programmes gate their LED incentives on QPL listing.
The DLC qualifies complete luminaires, retrofit kits and replacement lamps. Under the Linear Ambient primary use designation, utilitarian strip and shop-style fixtures are eligible. Products intended for cove lighting are not.
Read that again. LED tape in a cove is not rebate-eligible. A linear strip fixture doing the same lumens usually is.
On a 200-fixture retrofit, that gap decides the project. If the client is counting on incentive money, accent LED tape is a design expense, not an energy measure, and the schedule needs to say so.
One timing note: DLC SSL V6.0 applications close 2026-10-09 for updating V5.1 listings, and anything not moved to V6.0 is delisted on 2026-12-15. Specifying off an old cut sheet needs a QPL re-check first.
4. Dimming Is a Product Decision, Not an Accessory
You can’t bolt dimming onto LED tape after the fact. The driver does it, and the driver has to match both the LED tape and the control system.
- 0-10V is the commercial default. Clean, cheap, reliable. Needs a 0-10V driver and a control wire pulled to it.
- ELV/TRIAC shows up on small jobs reusing existing wall dimmers. Prone to flicker and buzz at the low end.
- DALI appears on larger spec jobs with addressable control.
Line-voltage tape and most neon flex don’t dim at all. Not a defect, just the trade for skipping the driver. A good linear strip fixture, meanwhile, ships with 0-10V already in the housing.
5. Channel, Heat and the Thing About Adhesive
LED tape needs an aluminum channel. Not “should have one.” Needs one.
Two reasons. Heat first: LED tape bonds its diodes to a thin flexible board with nowhere to dump heat, and running hot drops a 50,000-hour claim to 15,000 in practice. The extrusion is the heat sink.
The second is adhesive. Factory adhesive is a mounting aid, not a permanent fixing. On a warm surface, in a cove, over a few summers, it lets go. Every installer has a story about LED tape hanging out of a soffit.

What Is the Best LED Tape Light for a Commercial Job?
There isn’t one best product. There’s a best product per application, and the deciding spec changes every time. Score any candidate on six lines:
- Certification mark. cULus, cETL, CSA or cUL, and the “C” has to be there. No mark, no conversation.
- Location listing that matches where it’s going. Dry, damp or wet, stated on the sheet.
- Binning, 3-step MacAdam or tighter, so reels match.
- CRI and R9, published as real numbers rather than “80+”.
- Driver compatibility with the actual control system on the drawing.
- Lumens per metre at the CCT you’re ordering, not at the manufacturer’s best-case 6000K.
Anything clearing all six is a good LED tape light. Most retail product fails on lines one, three and four before you get to price.
And the awkward truth: the best LED tape light is often not LED tape at all. Outdoors, neon flex beats it. For ambient light and a rebate, a linear strip fixture beats it. LED tape wins where the source must disappear, and it’s excellent at that.
Four Real Scenarios, Four Answers
Retail store, illuminated shelving and under-counter. LED tape light, 24V, COB if the shelves are glass. Channel with a frosted diffuser. Dimming on 0-10V so the display can be tuned after fit-out. This is exactly what our guide to installing under-cabinet lighting walks through.
Office lobby cove, 40m perimeter. LED tape in channel, 24V, split into four feeds with drivers in an accessible ceiling space. Specify the driver locations on the drawing. If nobody can reach them later, you’ve designed a maintenance problem. And accept the rebate is gone.
Warehouse aisles. Linear strip fixtures, full stop. Not LED tape. You need 200 to 400 lux on the floor and a rebate cheque, and tape delivers neither. Our post on linear lights for warehouses covers the layout maths.
Restaurant patio, exposed to weather. Neon flex on line voltage. One roll, one connection, wet-location listed. LED tape here means a sealed channel, sealed end caps, and a driver in an enclosure. Three times the parts, three times the failure points.
Where LED Tape Gets Expensive
The reel price is the smallest number in the build-up. A realistic LED tape light budget carries the tape, channel and diffuser (40% to 60% on top), a driver sized with 20% headroom, an accessible enclosure for it, connectors and lead wire per run, a 0-10V control wire if it dims, and labour that runs high because channel needs cutting and mitring.
Buy on price per metre and you’ll miss all of it. A cheap reel with a poor binning spread also gives visible colour shift between sections, readable on a white wall from across the lobby.
Lighting is about 13% of the energy used in a commercial or institutional building, according to Natural Resources Canada. Accent LED tape is a small slice of that. Choose it for how it looks, and let the linear strip fixtures carry the energy argument and the rebate.
