What are the smallest recessed lights?
Two-inch and three-inch apertures are the smallest made. This is a 3-inch. It needs a 79mm (3.1") ceiling hole, the visible trim measures 94mm (3.7") across, and the body is 42mm (1.69") deep. That depth fits a 2x4 joist bay or a bulkhead where a can light won't go. Votatec also builds a 2-inch if the ceiling is tighter.
How many 3-inch pot lights do I need?
Work from lumens per fixture and beam spread, not aperture size. Each unit delivers 580 lumens certified, and the measured beam is 108° at half intensity, far wider than a 3-inch trim suggests. Spacing lands closer to a 4-inch than to a spot. In a kitchen or hallway at 8-foot ceilings, most contractors run 3 to 4 feet on centre.
What are the common problems with recessed lights?
Three, and this fixture answers two. Insulation contact is the first: the housing is certified Type IC, so batts may sit against it. Dimmer buzz is the second: ten dimmer models were bench-tested, all ELV or TRIAC, dimming 10% to 100%. The third is location rating, and it needs care. This model is damp rated only. Keep it out of showers and exposed soffits. Votatec's 3-inch gimbal and 3.5-inch panels are wet rated.
Will it fit your ceiling?
Allow a compartment of Ø4.9" x 1.7". The trim is smaller, but the IC-rated iron junction box rides on a quick-connect lead beside it, and the box sets the real clearance. The fixture is rated for enclosed luminaires and runs from -20°C to 40°C. It won't work on a 0-10V control system, so specify ELV or TRIAC.
