Product Overview

The Votatec 26W bathroom exhaust fan moves 100 CFM at 0.9 sones, quiet enough to leave running in an occupied home. 100 CFM. 26W. 0.9 sones. 860 r/min through a 4 in. duct, sized for full baths up to about 100 sq. ft. Galvanized steel housing, dual ball bearing motor, built-in thermal fuse. ENERGY STAR certified, HVI certified, and cETL listed for insulated ceilings and for use over a tub or shower on a GFCI-protected branch.

Is 100 CFM good for a bathroom fan?

For most full bathrooms, yes. The Home Ventilating Institute sizes fans at 1 CFM per square foot, so 100 CFM covers a bathroom up to about 100 sq. ft., roughly eight air changes an hour. Bigger isn't automatically better. Votatec's manual lists "CFM too great" as a reason a fan sounds louder than it should, and an oversized fan pulls more heated air out of the building. Under 50 sq. ft., the 18W 50 CFM model fits better.

How many sones is a quiet bathroom exhaust fan?

One sone or less is the mark for quiet, and most people accept anything up to 1.5. This unit runs 0.9 sones at full 100 CFM. One sone is about the sound of a quiet fridge. The rating is HVI certified, so a third party tested it rather than the factory estimating it.

Why does a new bathroom fan still sound loud?

Usually the duct, not the fan. Keep sharp bends at least 18 in. back from the discharge, and never reduce the duct below the 4 in. outlet, because a narrower duct raises noise and cuts airflow. Run it short, straight and vented outside. Screw the housing firmly to a joist, since a loose one rattles. Leave the door ajar too, because the fan can't move air it can't draw in.

Will it fit the ceiling you're working with?

Cut a 9-1/4 in. square opening. The housing is 9 x 9 x 5-7/8 in. and the 13 in. grille overlaps the finished ceiling, so it covers most existing openings on a retrofit. Foldable ears and adjustable hanger bars handle new construction and replacement alike. Two limits to check first: don't install it in a ceiling insulated beyond R40, and don't wire it to a dimmer or solid-state speed control. It isn't a range hood. For the install sequence, duct routing rules and the R40 and GFCI conditions, open the Manual (PDF) in the Related documents panel, and check the spec sheet if you need the 50 and 80 CFM columns for a mixed order. Send us your unit count and ceiling type and we'll come back with a wholesale quote.
