What is a jelly jar light fixture?
A jelly jar light fixture is a small wet-location luminaire built around a threaded glass globe inside a protective cage. The JVL100 is the cage version: a cast aluminum fitter, a frosted soda-lime globe, and a threaded die-cast guard that locks on with a set screw. Contractors also call these vapor-proof or vapor-tight jar fixtures. They suit stairwells, walk-in coolers, loading docks, mechanical rooms and wash bays.
How do you stop condensation in a light fixture?
Seal the conduit threads. The JVL100 manual is specific: use Teflon tape on the 1/2" or 3/4" NPT threads in wet-location environments, and keep the gasket seated when you attach the cast fitter to the junction box. Skip either step and moisture tracks in through the conduit, not the globe. That's the failure most people blame on the fixture. Close any unused wiring entrances with the plugs supplied.
Which bulb fits, and what's the wattage limit?
An A19 lamp with an E26 base. The bulb isn't included, and the manual caps it at 100W maximum. Stay under it. Over-lamping an enclosed wet-location fixture traps heat against the globe and the socket. Because it's lamp-ready, you can fit an LED A19 now and re-lamp later without touching the conduit.
Installation and site limits
The JVL100 lands on rigid conduit through a 1/2" NPS hub and a 4" round weatherproof box with cast mounting lugs. Pull at least 6" of supply lead into the box. Fixture leads are rated 150°C. White goes to neutral, black to line, and the ground bonds to the "GRD" green screw. The cast fitter fixes with the two 5/8" screws provided. Mount it vertical, which is the operating position on the spec sheet. Ambient range is -40°C to 80°C, so unheated warehouses and exterior canopies are in scope. Housing is metallic silver, weight 1.1 kg.
