What does Canada require for emergency lighting duration?
Thirty minutes in most occupancies, one hour in Group B occupancies and Group C retirement homes, two hours in high buildings. Ontario Building Code Art. 3.2.7.4(1)(b) sets the ladder, and 3.2.7.4(2) requires self-contained units to conform to CSA C22.2 No. 141. This unit is listed to No. 141-15.
Match the load to the building. At or under 45W you get 120 minutes, which covers a high building. Up to 65W holds 90 minutes. The 150W rating is a 30-minute figure, so it suits an occupancy where 30 minutes is the requirement.
What is an emergency lighting unit?
It's a self-contained battery pack with lamp heads that switches on by itself the moment normal power fails. CSA calls the category unit equipment. This one carries two 2W heads on the cabinet and feeds more heads remotely, so one battery covers a stairwell, a corridor and an exit door from a single circuit.
How many remote heads will it drive?
45W at 12VDC, on top of the two 2W heads on the cabinet. Our single and double remote lamp heads run on 6-24VDC, so they pair with this unit and every other battery unit we build. Voltage drop at 12V bites harder than at 24V, so keep remote runs short.
Will it suit the space and the circuit?
Mount it no higher than 15.6ft (4.7m). Feed it from an un-switched 24-hour circuit, and check that the breaker has a lock-on device, because the warranty is void without one. Brownout protection holds normal operation down to 80% of nominal supply; below that the heads glow dim. Keep it in heated indoor spaces. Give the charger 24 hours before any duration test.
