Are COB LEDs brighter than corn bulbs?
Not for this job. A COB chip fires light off one flat surface, so it throws in a single direction. A corn lamp rings small LEDs around a cylinder and puts out 360 degrees, close to how an HID arc tube behaved. Post tops, garden bollards, shoeboxes and highbay reflectors all had their optics cut for that all-round source. Drop a COB retrofit into one and you light the reflector, not the ground. Brightness per chip isn't the question. Distribution is.
What does the 36W/27W/18W switch change?
Output, and nothing else. At 5000K the three steps give 5,400lm, 4,050lm and 2,700lm. At 4000K they read 5,580lm, 4,185lm and 2,790lm. Colour sits on a separate switch, so you can run 4000K at 18W without touching wattage. One SKU covers a 50W, 80W or 100W metal halide swap. Commission the site at full output, then trim the wattage after the lighting audit instead of restocking.
Can this corn bulb run horizontally?
Yes, and that's specific to this size. The datasheet clears the 36W for both horizontal and vertical mounting. Votatec's 100W and 120W corn lamps are vertical only. So a horizontal wall pack or a side-entry canopy socket that rules out the bigger lamps still takes this one. Inside an enclosed fixture the compartment needs at least 14.96 x 7.87 x 7.87 inches (380 x 200 x 200mm). The lamp is 3.35 inches across and 7.56 inches long, so the fixture decides, not the bulb. Damp locations only, never wet.
Does it qualify for utility rebates?
On the E39 base. Both bases ship in the package, and the DLC listing (ID PTF9XDOE) covers the mogul configuration, not the medium one. Fit the E26 adapter and your rebate paperwork stops matching the listed product. Confirm with your utility before you commit the socket.
