Can you replace a metal halide bulb with LED?
Yes, and this one does it on line voltage. Wire it straight to 120V, 208V, 240V, 277V or 347V. The existing ballast, capacitor and ignitor must come out first, because a live ballast will produce a high voltage resonance that breaks the lamp down (Manual, Fig. 5).
That's the split most buyers miss. Ballast-compatible lamps leave the ballast in and keep its losses and its failure rate. This one removes them, which is why the energy saving is real and why the retrofit needs a qualified electrician.
What LED replaces a 175W metal halide?
The factory rates this 80W lamp against a 170W metal halide, and it delivers 10800-11600 lumens against roughly 14000 initial lumens from a 175W MH lamp. Metal halide loses 30-50% of that over its life. LED holds output, so designed light levels land closer than the raw numbers suggest. Take a footcandle reading before and after on any job where levels are specified.
Why this lamp mounts base-up only
Vertical only. The 80W through 125W lamps in this family are cleared for vertical mounting, while 12W through 63W run either way. Heat rises through the fin stack, and laying it horizontally traps it. If your fixture holds the socket sideways, drop to the 63W or specify a fixture instead.
Will it fit inside an enclosed fixture?
Check the shade before you order. An enclosed shade needs at least 42 x 23 x 23 cm of internal volume for the 80W, in glass or semi-glass, with nothing covering the surface that would block heat (Manual, p.1). The lamp itself is 5.11 inches across and 10.71 inches long. Open luminaires are the default fit. Keep it out of smoke, sulfur and corrosive air, and don't test it on a generator.
