How long do LED step lights last?
Fifty thousand hours, rated. Run the stairs six hours a night and that's about 22 years before the COB source reaches end of rated life. The 3-year warranty covers manufacturing defects from the original purchase date, and the driver-side electronics sit outside the fixture, so the part that usually fails first isn't buried in the wall. Rated operating range is -20°C to 40°C, which covers an unheated vestibule or a garage stairwell.
Can you install this step light outdoors?
No. It's IP20, and the manual rates it for indoor use only. The cETL damp-location listing means it handles humidity, a covered entry or a bathroom hallway, not rain, snow or sprinkler spray. Exterior stairs and pathways need a wet-location fixture instead. The same lens that makes this one comfortable indoors offers no water path protection outdoors.
What size hole does it need?
Cut 1-5/16 inches, 33 mm. The trim covers a 1-31/32 inch (50 mm) face, and the body sits 1-13/32 inches (36 mm) deep behind the finished surface, so check the stud bay before you commit to a location. Two spring clips do the mounting: squeeze, push, and it's seated. No housing, no ring, no rough-in plate. Factory lead is 310 mm.
What driver does a 12V DC step light need?
A DC driver, not a landscape transformer. This fixture runs on DC 12V and ships without one, so the spec needs a listed AC120V to DC12V supply sized for the connected load. Mind polarity, the lead is red and black. Twelve fixtures on one run still only pull 12W, so a single small driver usually covers a whole staircase.
