This is an interior step light, not an outdoor one. The 2" square die-cast aluminum trim recesses into a wall or stair riser and washes light down through a deep-set 60° optic, so you see the tread, not the source.
1W draws 18 lumens at 3000K, CRI above 80, on a 12V DC low-voltage feed. One fixed colour temperature. Not dimmable.

How do you light up indoor steps?
Recess a low-output fixture into the wall beside the tread, around shin height, and aim it down. That's what this one does. The 60° optic sits deep in the housing, so the LED stays out of your sightline. 18 lumens sounds small, and it's meant to be. On a dark stair your eye is already adapted, and a bright source at tread level blinds more than it helps. Space them along the run.
What are common stair lighting mistakes?
Specifying an accent fixture as the code light. Ontario Building Code 3.2.7.1 asks for an average of 50 lx at tread level on exits and public corridors. A 1W, 18-lumen step light won't get you there on its own. Use these as supplementary wayfinding under a compliant stair luminaire and keep the photometric budget on the main fixture. This marks the step. It doesn't light the room.
What size cutout does the 2" square trim need?
A 1-5/16" (33mm) round hole. The square trim covers it, and the round version of this fixture uses the identical cutout, so you can drill one hole size across a job and choose trim shape later. Depth behind the wall is 1-13/32" (36mm), which clears a 2x4 stud cavity with no back box. Spring clips hold it, and it ships with a 12-13/64" (310mm) lead, so plan the low-voltage junction within about a foot.
Can these step lights be used outdoors?
No. The spec sheet rates it IP20 and the manual says indoor use. The cETL damp-location listing covers interior humidity, a bathroom or a covered stairwell, not rain or sprinkler spray. For exterior steps and retaining walls, ask us for a sealed fixture instead.
