The BAK-004G slide dimmer carries 300W of dimmable LED or CFL, double what most 120V slide dimmers sold in Canada handle, and it wires as either single pole or 3-way from the same device.

Can a 3-way dimmer switch be used as a single pole?
Yes. This one is built for both. The manual rates it single pole or three way, so the same BAK-004G drops into a one-switch circuit or a two-switch circuit with no change of part number. In a 3-way circuit it has to pair with a 3-way switch, not a second dimmer, and not a standard single pole switch.
What's the difference between a dimmer switch and a 3-way dimmer switch?
A single pole dimmer controls a light from one spot. A 3-way dimmer controls the same light from two spots, so a hallway, a stairwell or a shop floor with doors at both ends can dim from either end. The wiring differs. Single pole takes line and load. The 3-way arrangement adds a pair of red travellers between the two devices. Both need the green ground.
How much LED can one dimmer carry?
300W, and that's where this model parts company with the field. Most 120V slide dimmers cap dimmable LED and CFL at 150W. On 12W LED pot lights, 300W is roughly 25 fixtures on one switch leg instead of 12.
Minimum load matters just as much. The spec sheet sets 5W for LED and 15W for incandescent, halogen and CFL. Sit below it and lamps can flicker or fail to start. Ganging costs you capacity too. The manual's incandescent table gives 600W in a single gang, 500W each in a double, and 400W each in a triple.
What this dimmer won't do
It's an indoor, in-wall device rated 0C to 40C, so unheated garages and exterior boxes are out. Copper conductors only, with supply wire rated 75C or better. CFL loads are held to fewer than 5 lamps. Non-dimmable LED won't dim on any dimmer, so check the lamp is marked dimmable before you quote the job.
