Can I connect a motion sensor to an existing light switch?
Yes, as long as that switch is single-pole and the box has a neutral. The BAG-001 replaces a standard light or fan switch. Black to line, red to load, white to neutral, green to ground, with wire nuts and screws included. It isn't suitable for 3-way switching. If two switches control the same light, use our PIR Motion Sensor Dimmer Switch instead, which is 3-way and runs off the live wire when there's no neutral.
How long will a motion sensor switch stay on?
Anywhere from 5 seconds to 10 minutes. Pop the small cover below the lens and you'll find three trim pots. TIME sets the delay, counter-clockwise for the minimum and clockwise for the maximum. SENS sets sensitivity. LUX sets the ambient light threshold, and this one trips people up. Leave LUX at maximum and the switch responds to motion regardless of daylight. Back it off counter-clockwise and the lights stay off while the room is already bright enough.
Do you need a special switch for a motion sensor light?
You need one rated for the load you're switching. The number that matters on an LED retrofit is 5A, not the 1000W tungsten headline. Fan work is where the 1/4 HP motor rating earns its place, since plenty of sensor switches stop at 1/6 HP. Set the slider to A for occupancy control, auto on and auto off, with push-button override. Set it to M and it behaves like an ordinary switch.
What are the downsides of using motion sensor lights?
Placement, mostly. Coverage runs about 25 ft across 180 degrees from a normal switch height, measured at 20 to 25°C, and a warm room shortens it. Glass and other transparent barriers block it. Keep it 4 ft clear of heat sources and away from supply vents, or warm air will cycle the lights. Indoor use only, 0°C to 40°C.
