Timer Switch

The HET06-J replaces a standard single-pole light or fan switch and needs no neutral wire, so it fits the older boxes that turn away most digital timers.

Six preset intervals cover 5 minutes to 4 hours. Hold the button past 5 seconds and it stays on indefinitely. A latching relay does the switching, not a triac.

Does a timer switch need a neutral wire?

Not this one. The HET06-J runs on three conductors: line, load and ground. In older Canadian buildings the box often has line and load and nothing else. That's where most digital timers stop being an option.

The ground isn't optional, though. The manual says the unit won't operate without it, because the electronics take their supply between line and ground instead of pulling it through your load. Land the green or bare conductor. No ground means no working switch, so call an electrician before you go further. Give it 2 minutes to wake up after you restore power.

How does a bathroom fan timer switch work?

Press a preset and the indicator flashes twice to confirm the countdown has started. The fan runs, then shuts itself off. Press ON/OFF at any point to kill it early, or press a different preset mid-countdown and it restarts at the new interval.

Hold ON/OFF past 5 seconds and every LED goes dark while the load stays on. That's the setting for a paint job or a long drying cycle. While the switch is off, the indicator blinks once, so you can find it in a dark room.

Can you wire it to a 3-way circuit?

No. Single pole only. The manual is blunt about it: if the existing wiring doesn't match a single-pole circuit, stop and check with an electrician. Two switches controlling one fixture means this is the wrong device.

What load will it actually carry?

1/4 HP on a motor, 800W tungsten, 800VA on an electronic or fluorescent ballast, 6.4A resistive. Every bathroom exhaust fan Votatec stocks draws between 18W and 30W, so fan duty leaves a wide margin. Heaters and big lighting banks are where you check the numbers first.
